I am on the Giant Ibis Bus headed to Phnom Penh. Nice bus, has wifi and power point at my seat. I believe that the trip is 3.5 hrs. The bus picked me up at my hotel which was a bonus. We have just stopped at a fuel / service centre for bathroom stop … it was pretty good. I bought a Diet Coke and that made me happy.

I am blown away by the amount of rubbish thrown on the ground in this country. How can a country with so much rubbish be considered beautiful. I am hoping that this will get better as I travel north.

Phnom Penh is definately cleaner. I got a tuk tuk to my hotel.

Nangkol Village is nice. I have a private room but they do have dorm rooms which obviously attract back packers. I must look more closely when booking my rooms to see what other room types are available.

It looks lovely but there are people here who do not know how to use inside voices. I can even hear them in my room on the floor above. There are drunk Cambodian Women with Northern European husbands and children who are laughing playing and enjoying the pool while the parents drink and drink some more … maybe I am just too old but it is not very relaxing for me. It evolved into drinking yard glasses of beer and an arm wrestling competition. All good fun I suppose but not what I signed up for. The very hospitable staff do nothing to control the situation. It is not in their nature.

Never mind the pushy tuk tuk driver who picked me up at the bus station has talked me into a tour for tomorrow. I am doing the killing fields and the S21 prison. I didn’t even know if I wanted to do these.

I order chicken curry for lunch which was nice though it maybe had too much fish sauce. After a traditional lunch I decided to get fettuccine for dinner which looked good but was a bit bland … it probably needed some Kampot Pepper to give it a lift. I did not eat one meal after another … I relaxed in my room and did some writing on my website.

I think that the allure of the cabonara was that it came with garlic bread but that was a bit of a let down. When you eat Asian food every day you crave something from home. They were dry like crutons and without much garlic flavour.
